Mavis Staples, Philadelphia, 2004

Mavis Staples began singing with her family in a band in the 1950s.  They started off singing in church, but soon rose to become one of the most well known voices in gospel music.  By the 1960s the Staple Singers became one of the voices of the civil rights movement.  With Mavis God has always been at the center of her music.
